Close Your Eyes

my love is intense, my passion is deep.
i gave you the fullest of my affection
while you revelled in the attention,
and cut me deep with indecision-
remember that when you sleep.

so you're some dream of mine i wouldn't give up,
some child in the body of a man.
so you didn't want the heart i surrendered,
you can't be upfront in matters of the soul-
well at least I can.

you'll find yourself without me soon,
figuring out your own version of “too late”
and i will fold up the calculations that
brought me here – a one-sided love affair -
but you will ignorantly blame it on fate.

i was your until-something-better-comes-along,
your not-good-enough, your one-more-on-the-list.
but sex comes easy while love hides herself
like she hid inside me,
and i have to leave for you to understand this.

you were something nice to fall apart over,
i suppose i couldn't ask for a prettier devastation.
i rest in peace knowing we were doomed by design,
lust could not breed love, and this failure
was the seed of our creation.

so you found my heart in your possession,
but i never did mention
i wouldn't leave you with something you didn't want to keep.
so i won't be around, you won't hear a sound,
there are no questions, only fact -
i loved you and you didn't love me back -
remember that when you're awake,
remember that when you sleep.
